My First 90 Miler

Writer's picture: Bill MahaffyBill Mahaffy

One of the more iconic races in Upstate New York has to be the Adirondack Canoe Classic that is held the weekend after Labor Day in the beautiful Adirondack Park. The race traverses 90 miles of Adirondack waterways starting from Old Forge and Finishing at Saranac Lake. This race is capped at 250 total boats and is unique that the most competitive classes are the C4 and voyager (more than 4 paddlers) canoes over the traditional C2 and C1 canoes that dominate most other races.

This canoe was designed to meet the specs of the unlimited class in the C4 division of the Adirondack 90 miler

This year will be my first time participating in the race as my personal schedule in the past has prevented me from doing this race earlier in my career. With that being said as I have started to look up information on the race I have felt slightly overwhelmed in regards to the logistics of the entire experience. This is the reason that I have decided to lay out everything I have done and will do to prepare for this year's race from setting up of logistics all the way through my training and preparing my race nutrition. I am providing this information in hopes that it will help others pursue this race in the future and serve as a guide for those that are interested but unsure of how to proceed.

Stay tuned for further installations on this series!
